Deakin Uni and ABS sign data transformation deal

Deakin University and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) have signed a memorandum of understanding designed to improve data collection processes.

The ABS will take advantage of Deakin’s expertise to improve data quality and survey responses.

“The ABS has a world-leading reputation in producing quality, relevant statistics that make a difference,” said Australian statistician David Kalisch.

“We are always looking at ways to enhance our work. This agreement with Deakin University will allow us to produce more technologically advanced, cost-effective, timely and concise data as the ABS continues to unleash the power of statistics for a better Australia.

“This partnership is part of the ABS’s five-year, wide-ranging transformation program, supported by a new structure and governance, and investment in modernising our infrastructure.”

Kalisch signed the deal with Deakin University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jane den Hollander, at the Geelong Waterfront Campus.

Den Hollander said the new agreement with the ABS would build on its existing relationship with the agency, which last year set up its National Data Acquisition Centre at the university’s waterfront campus.

“Deakin is delighted to now partner with the ABS to help improve its survey program, drawing on our vast multidisciplinary expertise and experience, combined with the latest technological innovations,” den Hollander said.

“Deakin is committed to supporting the communities we serve, so we are pleased that government agencies such as the ABS have chosen to invest in Geelong and the local economy through jobs and research programs that will spring from our partnership.”
