Metro North adopts Nutanix cloud platform

Queensland’s Metro North Hospital and Health Service has deployed an enterprise cloud platform from Nutanix to reduce costs and help it develop new digital services to improve patient care.

The service comprises five hospitals in the north of Brisbane — Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital and the Redcliffe, Caboolture and Kilcoy hospitals.

Metro North has used Nutanix Enterprise Cloud to consolidate its data centre operations from four separate data centres to one primary site and one remote disaster recovery site.

By leveraging the cloud service, Metro North has now deployed an electronic referral management system as well as an enterprise service bus, which will be extended for broader clinical services in the near future.

Metro North Solutions Architect Antony Batrouni said adopting the Nutanix platform has allowed the company to launch services that are more complex and innovative.

“Nutanix ensures these services are reliable and can be turned into a platform faster than ever before,” he said.

Batrouni added that Nutanix has also helped the company make significant savings in database management systems licensing feeds and reduced the cost of deploying a new virtual machine by nearly 50%. The platform is meanwhile supporting around four times its previous workload and has additional capacity to spare.

“In a hospital environment, any cost savings made in areas such as IT are then available to be invested back into patient care,” he said.
