iProov to provide face recognition system for myGovID

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has selected iProov to implement a face verification solution for the myGovID digital identity platform.

Under the contract, iProov will provide its Genuine Presence Assurance technology to allow Australians to set up their myGovID digital identity using a simple face scan on their mobile devices.

This biometric identifier will be used to support access to a range of services, including managing tax returns, accessing health services and applying for benefits.

The system is able to be set up with only a brief, passive face biometric scan, and can work on any device with a suitable camera.

iProov CEO Andrew Bud said the company provides a highly secure service that requires the full knowledge and collaboration of the user to set up, and that can prevent impersonation or the use of copies of victims’ faces.

“iProov is honoured that the Commonwealth of Australia has entrusted us with such an important task — to secure the creation of digital identities against impersonation,” he said.

“We are delighted that the Australian Government has chosen our unique combination of inclusivity and resilience, which is already trusted by governments worldwide to authenticate citizens.”

iProov technology is already in use by the Singapore Government for its national digital identity platform SingPass — which myGovID is partly based on — and by the UK Home Office for the EU Settlement Scheme, as well as the US Department of Homeland Security for land border crossing.

The Genuine Presence Assurance is the only biometric authentication system certified to meet the highest level of the European Electronic Identification, Authentication and Trust Services (eIDAS) international digital identity scheme.
