PM&C develops digital briefing system

The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet has developed a digital briefing system to allow staff at the department to brief the Prime Minister in real time.

The Digital First System app was originally developed to digitalise the Incoming Government Brief (IGB) for newly elected prime ministers, replacing the traditional method of hand-delivering briefs in paper binders or in PDF format on a portable electronic device.

PM&C staff were able to develop a prototype version in just 18 hours and delivered the briefing system to the Prime Minister within 40 days.

The system was so well received that it has evolved into an everyday tool for providing digital briefs to the Prime Minister.

Digital First System architect Nick Cornish said the app has been designed as a centralised site for collaboration, allowing multiple contributors to co-author documents and for the Prime Minister’s Office to leave feedback and respond via a comments thread.

He said the Prime Minister’s Office has requested a range of expansions to the system, and PM&C plans to share the system with a number of other federal agencies and potentially some state government departments.

“The system empowers APS employees by tapping into expertise and talents at all levels. It brings greater rigour, faster approvals and has streamlined the briefing process so it is ‘100 times easier’, according to one user,” Cornish said.
