Enea providing technology for Telenor's 5G SA core

Swedish telecommunications equipment provider Enea has provided technology for the 5G standalone network core of Norway’s top telecom service provider, Telenor.

The multivendor 5G standalone solution includes a proof of concept for a fully secure cloud-native 5G core for network slicing.

Standalone 5G networks do not rely on 4G networks for applications such as voice, keeping all transmissions within the 5G ecosystem. Network slicing can support high-performance telecom and enterprise applications by dividing and multiplexing multiple virtualised 5G networks on the same physical infrastructure.

For the project, Enea provided its cloud-native 5G data management solutions including the telco-grade, fully secure Unified Data Manager (UDM) platform. Enea technology is also providing end-to-end encrypted communications from the core to the edge of the network.

Telenor is also using Enea’s User Data Repository (UDR) and Authentication Server Function (AUSF) technologies to support its 5G data management capabilities.

Telenor Research VP Patrick Waldemar said Enea was selected for the deployment on the strength of the vendor’s product portfolio.

“Enea’s cloud-native, vendor-neutral data management products are robust and truly innovative. And Enea’s collaborative strategy resonates with our own ethos,” he said.

“By creating a multivendor environment, operators and enterprises can foster innovation, reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) and can cut time to market for new services.”
