Smart parking trials undertaken by City of Adelaide

A smart parking trial is being rolled out in Light Square by the City of Adelaide, with a view to expanding it across the city.

The technology is being trialled in 55 car parks to ensure everything works seamlessly when further rolled out across the CBD.

In-ground parking sensors have been installed in parking spaces located in Light Square and Morphett Street, between Franklin and Waymouth Streets.

This will allow testing of the functionality of the system on Adelaide streets. There will be no changes to parking for customers during the pilot.

Lord Mayor of Adelaide Martin Haese said he was pleased to see the rollout of smart parking in the CBD another step closer.

“We want people to come into the city and enjoy their visit, and parking is often a concern for visitors.

“Smart parking technology and the app — Park Adelaide — will make it easier for drivers to find and pay for an on-street car park, while also enabling them to top up to the maximum time limit of their parking space remotely.

“The implementation of smart parking technology on-street will be a first for South Australia. Not only will this technology put people first, it will also position Adelaide as a leading smart city.”

Adelaide’s smart parking technology will include sensors, along with an app, that will provide the public with accurate real-time information about parking availability and its controls (time limits), allow users to pay for their parking session and enable drivers to top up their payment remotely.

It will provide greater choice and improve customer service for city visitors. Importantly, it will further reduce the need for, and number of, parking expiations throughout the city. Approximately 2800 sensors will be installed, predominantly in ticketed parking bays.

Following a comprehensive tender process, the City of Adelaide has engaged global company Smart Parking Limited to implement the technology.

Smart Parking Limited uses an innovative cloud-based platform that will provide city visitors with an easy-to-use Park Adelaide app at their fingertips. This technology has been adopted in 17 countries, with over 55,000 wireless sensors installed across the globe.

The rollout of the sensors in other areas of the city will commence after the initial installation has been successfully tested.
