WA allocates $5m for statewide CCTV strategy
The Western Australian Government has allocated $5 million for local governments across the state to install or upgrade CCTV cameras as part of plans to develop an integrated CCTV network.
A funding pool is now open for local governments to apply to install CCTV cameras in crime hotspots or upgrade existing camera infrastructure to feed into the network.
Police and other authorised emergency services will be able to view the feeds of any camera on the network.
Police Minister Liza Harvey said the government is pursuing a strategy to allow police and emergency services to remotely access a larger number of CCTV security cameras across the state.
“The government is pioneering an integrated CCTV network which will allow WA Police and emergency services to remotely access any compliant camera systems to help respond to emergency situations, including criminal and antisocial behaviour,” Harvey said.
“This government is committed to making communities safer through delivering tough laws and more police resources, and CCTV has been a great tool for deterring, preventing and solving crime. This will work on several levels — police can assess crime jobs almost immediately, use the vision to prosecute offenders and deter criminal behaviour.”
In total, the state government has committed $8.5 million for the CCTV strategy.
