Gov Tech Talks promote benefits of data access

A Tech Talk series has been launched which explains the benefits of greater access to government data.

Understanding and better utilising data can be used to improve policy, design more effective programs and deliver better services.

To showcase the latest initiatives that use data to deliver public benefits, the federal government has developed a video series of talks with prominent data researchers and users.

In the first Tech Talk video, Assistant Minister for Digital Transformation Angus Taylor speaks with distinguished epidemiologist and former Australian of the Year Professor Fiona Stanley AC, whose work in health data analytics has led to improved health outcomes for Australian children.

Stanley is a strong advocate for data linkage and analytics, as well as collaboration between government and researchers. She says that through the use of administrative health data, researchers have been able to examine issues such as the contribution of ADHD and foetal alcohol syndrome to juvenile incarceration, as well as the relationship between aeroplane travel and vascular diseases in the legs, such as deep vein thrombosis.

Following the first Tech Talk, Taylor will chat live on Facebook with Professor Louisa Jorm from the UNSW Centre for Big Data in Health Research on Wednesday, 2 August from 11 am.
