IP Australia implements electronic correspondence

IP Australia will implement electronic correspondence for patent holders and applicants this month as part of efforts to improve the customer experience.

Electronic correspondence will also be rolled out across plant breeders’ rights and designs over the remainder of the financial year. It will be used to inform applicants about the progress with their application, to alert rights holders about rights lapsing and for other standard correspondence.

The initiative forms part of IP Australia’s overhaul of its website and online services, and is designed to provide a seamless user experience across IP Australia’s electronic presence.

In August, IP Australia announced that its AI-powered virtual assistant Alex, implemented as part of the overhaul, is capable of resolving 80% of web queries.

Alex is based on Nuance’s Nina virtual assistant technology and is capable of answering complex trademark questions in terms easy enough for a layman to understand.
