The DTA opens registrations for its Digital Governance Program

The Digital Transformation Agency has opened registrations for the Digital Governance Program, a mandatory two-day program for leaders appointed as Senior Responsible Officials for major digital projects.

The Australian Government’s Major Digital Projects Report highlights the critical importance of digital projects delivering secure, simple and connected services for Australians. Large digital projects are also among the most complex and costly undertakings in the public sector, requiring strong governance and leadership.

The DTA says the Digital Governance Program (DGP) blends expert‑led sessions, interactive board simulations and peer learning to equip SROs with the tools and confidence to lead successful digital projects. Participants work through a compressed simulation of a digital project lifecycle, from business case to closure. They apply practical strategies to manage risk, strengthen governance and safeguard the benefits the project is intended to deliver for Australians.

In addition to the interactive simulations and overviews of the role SROs play, the program is made up of five modules across the two days:

  • Governance and the Board: Introduces how SROs set up governance structures, outlining essential principles and leadership roles to support effective digital project delivery.
  • Project initiation: This emphasises responsibilities around selecting the right delivery approach. Walks participants through engaging key skills early and fostering a culture focused on delivering agreed outcomes.
  • Commercial acumen: Addresses key competencies for navigating commercial complexity around sourcing and managing suppliers.
  • Project delivery: Navigates through challenges around delivering projects with clarity, confidence and strategic foresight. Participants will learn how to manage disruptions, foster a culture of openness and leverage assurance to inform key decisions.
  • Release, transition and close: Here, SROs and their governance board will be prepared to oversee release readiness and transition new products or services into operations.

The DGP is a two‑day, in‑person program, for up to 12 total attendees, and the next session will be held on 22–23 September 2025. Attendance is mandatory for SROs of all major digital projects funded from Budget 2024–25 onwards. SROs of projects funded prior to 2024–25 are also strongly encouraged to complete the training.
