ATO will rename myGovID to myID in November
The Australian Tax Office has announced that in mid-November the Australian Government’s digital ID app, myGovID, will be renamed to myID.
The rename aims to resolve confusion between the myGovID app and myGov, following a recommendation from the Critical National Infrastructure myGov User Audit report.
The user audit had suggested that the government “consider merging the front ends of myGov and myGovID into a single mobile app” to “resolve widely aired confusion between the two apps”.
Separately, the government suggested the rebrand “also reflects the additional ways ... to use your Digital ID in the future for more government services and, eventually, private sector services” and “reflects the community’s understanding of Digital ID”.
When myGovID changes to myID, users won’t need to do anything differently. An update to the app will be issued through the relevant app stores in November.
Existing users will not need to set up a new myID. Login details and the user’s identity strength level set up in myGovID will stay the same and users can continue to use the app in the same way to securely access participating government online services.
The ATO received $11.5 million in the mid-year economic and fiscal outlook (MYEFO) at the end of 2023 to deliver the rebrand.
