Defence gets ISR integration capability

The Australian Defence Force is now benefiting from being able to access a new computer interface for allowing analysts to collate and search for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) data across multiple databases.

The new operational capability has been delivered as part of the first phase of Defence Joint Project 2096.

The system was delivered in partnership with Leidos Australia, which has been selected to continue as the prime system integrator for the next two tranches of Phase 1 of the project.

These tranches will respectively focus on extending the search and discovery functionality to deployed users, and on integrating data from allied, coalition and whole-of-government data stores.

Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy said the joint capability has been named Wagardi, a Larrakia word meaning dilly bag. The name was selected because the capability provides its users with access to a range of ISR information from one place.

“The Wagardi capability is a step change in the ease with which intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information is able to be accessed and utilised,” he said.

“Achieving this milestone allows Defence to put this capability in the hands of a broad range of personnel who rely on quick and reliable access to the vast amounts of information produced by Australian and allied Defence capabilities.”

Conroy said the outcomes of the project demonstrate the effectiveness of the Defence Joint Project procurement model in providing opportunities for Australian industry to directly contribute to development and integration services, data analytics, ICT support and the provision of supporting infrastructures.

“Having Leidos, together with other Australian providers, deliver the final two tranches of the joint project will ensure approximately $95 million is spent in Australia,” he said.
