Getting the basics right: cybersecurity readiness and frontier AI
The Department of Home Affairs has released a new Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) Advisory 001-2026 offering whole-of-government advice for ensuring strong cybersecurity readiness in the frontier artificial intelligence (AI) era.
Frontier AI technologies such as Claude Mythos are the most advanced, cutting-edge AI models available, and represent an anticipated step change in capability, however the advisory states that getting involved with such models is not immediately necessary if an agency has its cybersecurity fundamentals right.
Frontier AI increases the risks posed by, and accelerates the consequences of, known vulnerabilities, legacy systems and weak cyber hygiene. This creates a ‘vulnerability storm’ for entities.
The PSPF advisory states that Australian Government entities must ensure they are appropriately protected in the frontier AI era through the consistent application of cybersecurity fundamentals, and that these remain the Commonwealth’s most effective defence by strengthening its cybersecurity posture.
More information, including what actions Commonwealth entities should consider an immediate priority, how entities can act now, and the principles that guide this Policy Advisory is available.
